The Benefits of Two Stage Cooling

By Ben Wanner of Pro Service Mechanical

When given the option of a single stage or two stage air conditioner many homeowners will ask “what is the difference?” or “why do I need two stage cooling?” To understand the benefit we need to understand how it works. A single stage air conditioner comes on at full power until the temperature at your thermostat is satisfied. This would be much like turning your car AC on full blast until you are comfortable and then shutting it off until you get hot again. A two stage air conditioner comes on at only a portion of its cooling capacity and fan speed unless full capacity is needed. This lets the air conditioner run longer at the lower stage and helps dehumidify better, keeps and temperature in the house more even, uses less electricity and runs quieter.

Watch this video from Lennox which full illustrates the concept.
